The development of durable tools has been a priority since humanity began to rely on nature as a source of food. It was in the 20th century, with the discovery of stainless steel, that it experienced a revolution that would change the industry forever. This material, discovered in 1913 by Harry Brearley while searching for a corrosion-resistant alloy, found a natural ally in fishing.
In its first decades, stainless steel was slowly adopted by the maritime industry, but it was after the Second World War that the fishing industry began to understand its true potential. The combination of corrosion resistance and durability offered the ideal solution for these extreme environments where traditional equipment made of other materials deteriorated.

Advances in stainless steel led to a new generation of fishing equipment. Hooks, knives and nets began to incorporate stainless steel, creating greater efficiency in the fishing industry. Stainless steel hooks, for example, resisted corrosion better and did not break as easily, which had a positive effect on catches and reduced the cost of replacements.
Fishing vessels began to integrate stainless steel into their equipment and installations which ensured, and still does today, greater protection in extreme conditions.

Aquaculture and the future of stainless steel
The rise of aquaculture in recent decades has also been driven by stainless steel. Underwater cages, automated feeding systems and floating structures are made of this material, which is corrosion-resistant at the same time as environmentally friendly. Today, sustainable fishing and the evolution of equipment manufacturing are moving towards a cleaner future.
Stainless steel has transformed fishing and humanity´s relationship with the ocean. Its story is proof of how materials can change the way we interact with the natural world.
